Piovanelli is a former centre-forward. He played mainly for Pisa, scoring 47 goals in 152 matches from 1986 to 1991. He had experiences also at Atalanta, Hellas Verona and Perugia. Juventus bought him in 1991 but his condition wasn't good enough due to a bad injury he suffered in the previous season. Therefore, he was immediately sold before he could even play a match.
Piovanelli was a good striker gifted with a strong physique and remarkable technique which made up for his lack of notable speed. He was mostly distinguished for his accurate headers. He also possessed a powerful shot and a remarkable free kick ability. Despite playing as main striker, he didn't mind moving outside the box, showing decent passing skills occasionally.
