Bett was an unusual player in Scotland because unlike many of his contemporaries he spent time outside the UK, in both Iceland and Belgium, where he had two successful spells with Lokeren. His playing style also contrasted with many Scottish players as he was a central midfielder that wasn't a great ball winner, but instead was a classy player with a very good range of passing. While he was sometimes criticised for his lack of determination and his inconsistent play, he could also control games on his own and was respected for his ability to keep possession and distribute the ball. He was not the most mobile player but had good technique and close control, and he was also famed for surging runs carrying the ball from midfield. He was also a very good penalty taker. He mostly played on the left side of midfield for Scotland but played in the middle for Aberdeen. Bett won 29 caps for Scotland and played for his country at the 1990 World Cup. For Aberdeen he played 338 games and won 3 cup trophies while at the club. Unfortunately the league title eluded him during his Aberdeen days and he finished runner up in the league 5 times.
