INFO:Lindsay is a former left-back. He spent most of his career at Liverpool, where he made 248 appearances from 1969 to 1977, scoring 18 goals. He previously played for Bury from 1965 to 1969 for a total of 139 matches and 16 goals. He retired in 1979 after short experiences with Stoke City, in the USA with Oakland Stompers, and in Canada with Toronto Blizzard. He capped for England 4 times in 1974.
Signed by Liverpool as a wing-half or centre-half who could play as inside forward, Lindsay was turned into a left-back by coach Bill Shankly. It looked like he was a left-back his entire career thanks to his offensive skill that he put in good use for his team. He could pass the ball up the touchline, deliver accurate curled crosses, and occasionally make strong overlapping runs, sometimes scoring with powerful shots. Although he was a natural right-footed, he always used the left to hit the ball, whether he was crossing or shooting. His teammate Brian Hall described him as one of the best left-footed players he had ever seen, given that Lindsay could shoot three quarters the length of the field with a nice motion and make it look easy. Also a good penalty taker, he scored 8 times from the spot. Regarding his defensive ability, that wasn't one of his best assets. Nonetheless, he could cover the space in front of his opponent and sometimes make nice physical challenges. He lacked pace and aerial ability as he wasn't difficult to beat by an opponent who could reach a high ball before him. Having had his peak in the 1973-74 season, it was followed by serious personal problems that affected Lindsay's game and performances. He ended up as one of those players with a lot of wasted potential.
