INFO:
M'Pelé is a former centre-forward, secondary striker and attacking midfielder. His career started in 1966 at Standard de Brazzaville in his native country Congo. He transferred to France in 1969. He first played for Ajaccio until 1973, scoring 71 goals in 149 matches in four seasons. He then had his best time at Paris Saint-Germain where he played from 1973 to 1979, scoring 95 goals in 217 appearances. He then played for Lens and Stade Rennais before retiring in 1982. He represented Congo at least 29 times between 1971 and 1978, scoring 12 goals and winning the 1972 Africa Cup of Nations. In 2006, he was named among the best 200 African players of the past 50 years list compiled by CAF.
One of the best African strikers of his generation and one of the greatest ever Congolese players, M'Pelé was gifted with excellent technical qualities and speed that earned him the nickname "the black arrow". He also possessed very good ball distribution, accuracy on both feet, physical strength, and reaction on loose balls in front of the goal. A solid set piece taker, he was often in charge of free kicks and scored at least 14 penalties for PSG. Furthermore, he regularly supported the midfield by recovering balls, starting the attack or even carrying the ball forward himself from his own half.
