Parkes was a goalkeeper and Wolverhampton first choice for many seasons. He played over 300 matches with the Wolves from 1964 to 1978. Then he played for several teams in the United States and Canada, mostly for Vancouver Whitecaps and Chicago Sting.
Parkes was one of the tallest goalkeepers in the English league at the time. However he was very agile and spectacular. He was safe both in the air and on the ground. He was nicknamed "Lofty" due to his very powerful kicks from the goal. Despite his height, he seemed to have positioning and covering troubles while sometimes just made bloopers.
