Stefanello was a centre back and he's considered as one of the best defenders in the history of Reggiana. He played over 250 matches and scored at least 5 goals for the Granata, most of which in Serie B, from 1969 to 1977.
A tough and strong defender, his task was marking his opponent constantly. In a Coppa Italia match against Juventus he didn't let Bettega do anything. His toughness was also proved in another Coppa Italia game, this time against Inter: he stopped Boninsegna with a tackle to the knee but the referee didn't whistle; then when Stefanello marked tightly the striker again, the Inter player hit him with an elbow but the defender kept doing his job. He also was able in the air: for example one of his goals came against Brescia, when he hit with the head a ball coming from a free kick. In a match won 2-0 against Palermo he delivered an assist for one of the goals with a long accurate ball from the back.
