Callioni was a side-back who played as right winger and right side-midfielder before his position was slowly backed to defender. He had his best time at Sampdoria in 1976-77 and especially at Vicenza the following season that ended with Lanerossi reaching a historical Serie A second place. He also had spells at Spezia − where he started his professional career and where he played most of his matches −, Como, Torino, Reggiana and Livorno. He retired in 1981.
Callioni didn't have a strong physique but was gifted with decent speed. A very offensive player, he could deliver crosses from the flank or moving through the center and trying a long range shot with good power − which was the main reason why he was initially used as striker. Having played as attacker in young age, he felt comfortable inside the penalty area as well, being ready to hit the ball even though he wasn't too accurate from short distances. At Sampdoria he also scored two penalties.
