INFO:

Excellent player, one of the best right backs in the world at his peak. Gilbert Van Binst was a legendary Anderlecht player, mostly playing as an attacking right back but easily capable of playing in the centre as a sweeper as he did in the 1976 Cup Winners Cup final. As a player he was remarkably complete, very solid both offensively and defensively, scoring at a good rate with some penetrating runs in behind the defence but also having good positioning and, in particular, fantastic slide tackles which were expertly timed and executed. In his two Cup Winners Cup victories with Anderlecht, he captained the team in the 1976 final, and scored 2 goals in the 1978 final, with his second being a phenomenal curling shot into the top corner from outside the box. He also had good short passing ability and understanding with his teammates, he was a very intelligent player who always picked the correct options while on the ball, rarely losing possession. His main weaknesses were his poor aerial ability and his average physical strength, although that didn't hold him back when his tackles were consistently phenomenal.

Van Binst spent the vast majority of his career at Anderlecht, playing a season at Toulouse and 2 seasons at Club Brugge at the end of his career. On the other hand he only earned 15 caps with Belgium after falling out with manager Guy Thys over his refusal to play against his club teammate and friend Rob Rensenbrink in a match against the Netherlands.
