Defence MindedINFO:Phil Parkes was a goalkeeper. His career began in 1968 at Walsall. In 1970 he joined Queens Park Rangers, where he played 406 matches, reached the historical First Division second place in 1975-76 and managed to cap once for England in 1974. He left QPR in 1979 for West Ham United. He played 444 games for the "Hammers" until 1990 and he's regarded by many West Ham fans as the club's greatest goalkeeper. He retired one year later after a spell at Ipswich Town.
Parkes was a tall, strong and commanding goalkeeper, showing to be one of the most oustanding number 1 in the country. He had very good reaction and was effective between the posts or near the goal, stopping also powerful shots. He was gifted with a powerful kick, which could send the ball even to the other side of the field. At QPR though, he made several huge mistakes throughout the match: he wasn't much effective when he had to run out of the goal and defend in 1-on-1 situations, sometimes disastrous, being out of position or catching the ball to miss it immediately after. When he joined West Ham, he still proved to have great reaction and also cat-like agility despite his huge size and the advance of age. Despite his knee problems, he managed to play hundreds of matches: an ever-present, he missed only three league games between 1980 and 1984 and all them in the 1981-82 season. He still showed positional problems but his performances were of great level: he led the team to win the 1979-80 FA Cup and kept 22 clean sheets the following season, helping West Ham being promoted to the First Divison.
