Former Celtic scoring machine John "Dixie" Deans was one of the most prolific strikers in Scotland in the late 60s and early 70s. For Celtic he scored 124 goals in 184 games and some of his scoring feats were incredible. Among these, he once scored 6 in a league game against Partick Thistle, twice scored a hat trick in a cup final and also scored 18 goals in 13 games against Hibs (who were just as strong as Rangers during this time). Deans was an instinctive striker, who despite his short size was particularly known for his strength and combative style of play, and his good aerial ability. His main weapon was excellent movement and reactions inside the box. While at Motherwell he was known as a "bad boy" and often got into trouble with authorities (he was serving a 6 game ban when Celtic signed him) he cleaned up his act after joining Celtic and was able to channel his aggressive style of play positively, and the fans appreciated his fighting spirit on the pitch. Deans was an out and out goal scorer in the same mould as other Celtic greats like Jimmy McGrory and Stevie Chalmers. He always wanted to get in behind the defence and constantly gave the defenders headaches. While the rest of his game was mostly below average, if you gave him 2 inches inside the box he would punish you. Despite his fantastic scoring record he holds two unfortunate "achievements": that he never scored for Celtic against Rangers, and that in 1972 he became the first ever player to miss in a penalty shootout in European competition, which directly led to his team missing out on reaching the European Cup final. He gained 2 caps for Scotland and was crucial in many of Celtic's achievements in the period.
