INFO:
Clerici was a centre forward. Undoubtedly one of the best ever players in the history of Lecco and the most beloved by the club's supporters, he played for this team from 1960 to 1967, scoring 66 goals in 212 matches. He was Serie A top scorer in the 1964-65 season. After two not very good seasons at Bologna and Atalanta, he had better times in the following years. He scored 27 goals in 67 games at Hellas Verona between 1969 and 1971, 28 in 67 at Fiorentina between 1971 and 1973, 32 in 66 at Napoli between 1973 and 1975. He retired in 1978 after two seasons at Bologna and one at Lazio.
Clerici was very agile, gifted with a solid physique, excellent technique, a powerful shot and superb touch and control of the ball with both feet as well as the outside. Responsiveness and opportunism inside the box were among his best qualities in addition to a remarkable accuracy with headers, thanks also to a good leap. He was also a penalty specialist, having scored 20 penalties between 1970 and 1975. A master of dribblings, in an interview Clerici considered his best goal the one he scored with Fiorentina in a 2-0 win against Milan, despite being slightly injured: he took the ball in the left side of the midfield, challenged Karl-Heinz Schnellinger, faked a cross and made the ball pass under the leg of the defender before running towards the goal and score. This happened in the first half and despite Clerici being tired, he was told by coach Niels Liedholm to play in the second as well because he could still get two defenders busy. In the same interview, he compared himself to Gabriel Batistuta for the way he ran to the box fearless. It was hard to take the ball away from his feet and despite playing as centre forward, he used to move a lot on the flank and deliver crosses for other strikers.
