David Needham spent the biggest part of his career with Notts County, but enjoyed great successes with their rivals, Nottingham Forest. Needham played as a center back, tough, good in defensive positioning and reactions, but not top class. His greatest asset was his aerial play, he was very dangerous when he enters opposing penalty box. He was classical type of center back, always finding the simplest solutions, giving the ball to the nearest player, and not participating in organization of attacking actions. At Nottingham, he was mostly used as a cover for Burns and Lloyd.
