Rustom is a former defensive midfielder or centre back, capable of playing as centre forward and goalkeeper. He spent his entire career at Sagesse, playing there from 1966 to 1988. He capped for Lebanon many times, representing the national team for nine years throughout the 1970s and early 1980s.
Mainly a defensive midfielder or centre back, he was though initially deployed mostly as centre forward and occasionally as goalkeeper. Therefore, he developed both scoring and defending abilities throughout his career. A self-confident leader and captain in both Sagesse and Lebanon national team, Rustom was good at controlling the midfield. He used to keep playing with effort until the referee blew the final whistle. His team used to play with the "system" type formation and his versatility allowed him to always fit well. He told in an interview that his most memorable match was a 1-0 win against Dinamo București in 1972, where he played as centre forward and scored the winning goal.
