That's what Bill Shankly once said of Tommy who was a hard as nails central defender who played under Bill, and later, Bob Paisley. Smith won every trophy imaginable whilst playing for The Reds and smashed his way through every opponent he faced along the way. He made his first impression with Bill Shankly when on the 1961-62 pre-season when, at aged 16, Smith beat the giant Ron Yeats to score a header in training. Tommy first became captain of Liverpool in 1971 when they played in the FA Cup final, and also skippered Liverpool's success in the 1972-73 season as they claimed a League Title and a UEFA Cup double. But Smith almost left Liverpool in 1973 due to his captaincy being given over to the younger Emlyn Hughes, and was also removed from his favoured Centre-back role to a Full-back. Smith eventually settled his differences with Bill Shankly, but a long-term feud occured between Smith and Hughes. Tommy remained an important player for Liverpool however, and went on the win the 1974 FA Cup. After the emergence of youngsters Phil Thompson and Neal his league appearances dwindled somewhat, yet remained a valuable asset in Liverpool's League and UEFA Cup success of 1976. https://youtu.be/a1MR_50f4T8 |
