Jarvie was a versatile player capable of playing as a forward and midfielder: his two main positions were as the deeper player in a striking partnership or as a central midfielder. He was a tenacious player known for his movement in the box and excellent aerial ability despite not being very tall. Many of his 131 goals for Aberdeen were from close range as he sneaked in between defenders to get on the end of crosses or deflections. This ability was still apparent when he played as a midfielder as his late runs into the box allowed him to grab many goals from that position. He was solid in possession, not particularly creative but reliable. Jarvie was also known for his recognizable combover haircut and for his goals in important occasions. He scored in the 1976/1977 League Cup final against Celtic, and also scored 7 goals in 7 games in the run-in to the end of the 1979/80 season which handed the league title to Aberdeen. |
