Joe Harper was an excellent striker, one of the most prolific in Scottish League history; since World War II only 5 players have scored more goals than him in Scotland's top division. Harper was most known for his short and chunky (or even fat) physique and for his predatory instincts in the box. While mostly recognised as a great poacher, his overall game was quite underrated and he possessed pretty good dribbling skills in tight areas and decent passing ability. His low centre of gravity and acceleration made it quite difficult to dispossess him and while he wasn't inclined to run with the ball at his feet, he was especially good at turning and shooting. On the other hand his first touch could be inconsistent. In the penalty box, Harper was cold blooded and seemingly always in the right place at the right time. He was a confident finisher and while most of his goals didn't require difficult shots, he loved to emphatically smash the ball into the net from close range. Beyond his talents on the pitch, Harper had an abrasive and often controversial personality that often led him to fall out with his managers, including Alex Ferguson at the end of his career at Aberdeen. He was a very confident person and didn't accept criticism well which put him at odds with the notoriously demanding Ferguson. This personality also endeared himself to Aberdeen fans and he is maybe the most beloved player in the club's history. In addition to his time at Aberdeen, he also had notable spells at Morton, Hibs and a relatively unsuccessful time at Everton. While at Hibs, Harper incredibly scored a hat trick in a cup final and still ended up on the losing side, as they lost 6-3 to Celtic with Dixie Deans also scoring a hat trick for the winners. |
