INFO:
Calloni is a former centre forward. He had most success in his early years, scoring 25 goals in 55 matches at Varese from 1972 to 1974 ─ leading the team from Serie B to Serie A ─ and 54 goals in 143 games at Milan from 1974 to 1978 even though 36 in the first two seasons. As the following two years were very disappointing, he was sold to Hellas Verona. He played also for Perugia, Palermo, Como and other clubs in minor leagues, retiring in 1984.
Even though Calloni scored a very good number of goals in his first two years at Milan, he was distinguished for the huge amount of goals he missed, some of them quite incredibly. He mostly remained inside the box, preferring to run the least possible as he himself said: « If I run too much, I reach the goal with the blurred vision and likely miss my chance to score». A left-footed striker, he wasn't fast but had good scoring sense and strength to stand up for himself against the defenders, didn't have remarkable technique but could score great goals in acrobacy, had a good jump and scored numerous headers. Moreover, he scored over 10 penalties and several free kicks. Nonetheless, he was capable of missing goals from very favourable positions or, even worse, losing the time to tap the ball in front of an empty goal. When he received a pass and he had to make a short sprint to stop the ball, it was likely that his control was bad and stiff. Journalists used to make jokes about him like: « Calloni is completely alone two meters away from the goal and he avoids the threat! ». In conclusion, he was one of the best and one of the worst Italian strikers of the 1970s at the same time.
