A cross between Thijssen and Neeskens, the midfielder did not have an exceptional talent, but he did steal all hearts with his unbridled commitment and fighting spirit, not only to demolish, but also to play football and seek depth. This immediately resulted in more goals. He would be seen triggering the attacks from deep, widening the game on the side, or running to the front to try and receive a ball behind the defence. Mostly careful in the middle and playing short passes, occasionally he would launch a long ball to try and find the strikers. The midfielder did not have an exceptional talent, but he did steal all Deventer hearts with his unbridled commitment. not only to demolish, but also to play football and seek depth. This immediately resulted in more goals. Arntz was a cross between Thijssen and Neeskens. Arntz grew out of the famous Go Ahead youth academy in the late 1960s, early 1970s. He made his debut for the Deventer in the Eredivisie on 7 February 1971, two days after his 18th birthday, in an away match against Ajax . Halfway through 1974, the 21-year-old Arntz attracted the interest of Ajax coach Hans Kraay sr. However, the transfer fell through. As a player of Go Ahead Eagles , Arntz was first invited to the Dutch national team in 1975. In June 1976 Arntz was part of the selection of the Netherlands at the European Championship. On 1 July of the same year he moved to North Holland after all, because AZ'67 from Alkmaar bought him. Hans Kraay sr. had meanwhile become the trainer/manager there. Ajax was also interested in Arntz in mid-1976, but Arntz preferred the certainty of a basic place at AZ'67 over the risk of becoming a bench seat at Ajax, which already had many good midfielders at that time: Arnesen, Schoenaker, Lerby, René Notten and Hans Erkens. Arntz played for AZ for ten years, with which he became national champion (1980/81), won the KNVB Cup three times (1977/78, 1980/81, 1981/82) and reached the final of the UEFA Cup (1980/81). In 1979/80 Arntz finished second with AZ, behind Ajax. Former AZ coach Jan Notermans about Peter Arntz in the 1980/81 season which was very successful for AZ: "When Metgod and Spelbos (the two centre-backs) went, Arntz stopped all the holes, while also building up the strength to go outside to let others score. He was the player who played the most in service for the team, and therefore was the most useful." Spoiler: show |
