Rightfully considered one of the most effective flank defenders of the White-Blues. Grandfather Maslov himself guaranteed Matvienko a place at Dynamo Kyiv - At the same time, Maslov saw him as a central defender in the Cossacks - partner Vadim Sosnikhin. But...in the fall, Deda left Dynamo, and Alexander Aleksandrovich Sevidov, who replaced him, transferred Viktor from the center of defense to the left flank. And didn't miss! San Sanych was able to determine the best playing features of this player - high speed, coordination and softness of movements, good ball control, ability and desire to connect to attacks, organize them. However his shortcomings (such as sharpness in attack and equal distribution of stamina) were corrected by the arrival of Valeriy Lobanovskyi.
From the very beginning of the 74/75 season, Viktor Matvienko made an application for a fundamentally new game: he felt that simply joining the attack or giving a pass under attack was not enough. Football practiced by Dynamo coaches required more sharpness and additional efficiency. And Matviyenko began to break even into the goalkeeper's area of the rivals! Right footed but his left was pretty accurate. A physically strong and broad-shouldered graduate of the Zaporozhye Metallurg school kept well on his feet. Fans dubbed him a safe - it was very difficult to put this defender on the lawn, rather, on the contrary, the oncoming opponents, crashing into Victor, flew off him like peas from the wall. Despite his impressive size, he was an extremely coordinated athlete, had a high starting speed and maneuverability. Such virtues allowed him to be not only a Dynamo base player (1970-1977), where he arrived at the age of 22, but also to be regularly called up to the USSR national team.
One of the truly stellar performers of Dynamo. Matviyenko played 209 matches in the Premier League, scoring 8 goals. He is a 4-time champion of the USSR, the owner of the Union Cup, the Cup Winners' Cup and the UEFA Super Cup. In the lists of "33 best" was listed at the end of five seasons. For the first and Olympic teams of the USSR he played 23 matches, the silver medalist of the 1972 European Championship and the bronze medalist of the 1976 Olympic Games.
