Johan Boskamp was the leader. An incomparable presence as a personality and playmaker. Engine of the team, an inexhaustible breath, a power and an exceptional physical condition but also a famous sense of dribbling and a formidable distance shot. His strength of character, will, energy, way of dragging the whole team in his wake proved decisive in winning the title. Extremely accurate passing with a nice curve, real central and attacking midfielder, free kick taker. Very strong and technically equipped, also liked to tackle a lot.
A native of Rotterdam. At the age of 17 he played for the large Feyenoord. Boskamp had to deal with fierce competition at the Rotterdam club, as Jansen, Hasil and Van Hanegem also played at the club at that time. Boskamp won the Eredivisie title twice with Feyenoord between 1970 and 1974. In 1974 the UEFA Cup was also won. In the return of the final Boskamp was allowed to come in, but he also had to leave the field injured. Because of the notion that he was dropped in the finals (even though he played the whole season) he decided to leave Feyenoord.
After eight professional years in the Netherlands, he settled in Belgium in 1974. The midfielder signed with RWDM, immediately grew into the title holder and was even allowed to wear the captain's armband. The cheerful Rotterdammer impressed with his strength and flair at RWDM. Barely two years after the creation of the merger club, after the merger of Racing White and Daring Club Molenbeek, it was crowned Belgian champion in 1975, ahead of Anderlecht. 'Bossie' was the first foreigner ever to receive the Golden Shoe that season. In 1977, RWDM managed to pull off a stunt by reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup. Ultimately, he would stay with the Molenbekenaren until 1982.
Boskamp's great performance in the Belgian league was also noticed in the Netherlands. In 1978, the player was allowed to make his debut in the Dutch national team. In the game against Tunisia, Boskamp was allowed to fill in for Willy van de Kerkhof. The Netherlands won the exhibition match 0-4. Boskamp was then also called up for the 1978 World Cup. Boskamp was allowed to fill in against Scotland, but was no longer in the game piece.
