Ton Thie was ADO's greatest ever goalkeeper and one of the best to never be capped for the Netherlands. During his career he faced strong competition from Pieters Graafland, Doesburg, Jongbloed, Schrijvers and Van Beveren so he unluckily never managed to appear for his country despite the fact he was a very good goalkeeper, although he made the reserve list for the 1974 World Cup. Thie was a large and well built goalkeeper with good aerial presence and excellent reflexes, agile and quick despite his size. He was great at stopping close range shots and was also known for his ability to save penalties. He used his large body well by spreading himself out to block close shots, and was good at claiming crosses. On the other hand he sometimes chose to punch shots that could probably be caught. Thie played for ADO for 13 years and with 430 appearances for the club he is 2nd in their all time list.
