INFO:
Ghelichkhani is a former defensive or central midfielder, capable of playing as sweeper, centre back, side back and centre forward. He played for several clubs in Iran from 1962 to 1977: Kian Tehran, Taj, PAS Tehran, Oghab Tehran, Daraei and Persepolis. He retired in 1978 after a season with San Jose Earthquakes. He capped for Iran 66 times, scoring 14 goals. He holds the Asian record of three AFC Asian Cup wins, which he did in a row between 1968 and 1976, the last time as captain. Unfortunately, he wasn't called up for the 1978 FIFA World Cup. A participation in the tournament would have ultimately established his already successful career. During his career, he was offered a contract by Galatasaray and Bayern München. In the first occasion he was considered too young to play professional football outside of Iran. In the second case he couldn't join the team due to passport issues.
Regarded as one of the best and most complete Iranian players ever, Ghelichkhani was distinguished for his versatility that allowed him to play in midfield, attack and defence. Iran had many players who could cover positions in every zone of the field but Ghelichkhani was equally well in all positions he played in. However, it's as midfielder that he had his best performances as he was brave and hardworking, possessed great vision and stamina, a powerful shot and good scoring ability. These qualities were a perfect fit for the role. Moreover, he possessed remarkable aerial skills despite his relatively short height as he could hit high balls by overcoming much taller players. There's who considers him the best in terms of defensive skills, some consider him the best shooter as the long range shot was one of his specialties, others the one who possibly provided more assists. Ghelichkhani's arguably most important goal, which earned Iran the 1976 Asian Cup win in the final against Israel, was a tremendous shot from the middle of the field that surprised the Israeli goalkeeper who had no chance to stop it. He scored a similar goal in 1973 against Australia in a 1974 FIFA World Cup qualifying match, when he beat the Australian goalkeeper with a long range shot from 30 meters. Ghelichkhani had an illustrious career but it's said that he never reached his full potential due to some bad injuries, possibly caused by his defensive playstyle that was mostly physical. He also had a weight problem because he constantly gained kilos. Therefore, he wasn't as quick as other players. Nonetheless, he had a constantly good preparation and he came back stronger than before everytime he came back from an injury.
