Ashtiani is a former right back. He spent the majority of his career at Persepolis from 1968 to 1976 (excluding a loan to Paykan in 1969-70), making 162 appearances, scoring 2 goals, winning the Iranian Football League in 1971-72, 1973-74 and 1975-76. He previously played for Shahin. He capped for Iran 34 times, scoring once and winning the 1968 and 1972 AFC Asian Cups. He was selected Iranian Footballer of the Year in 1971 and MVP of the Asian Cup in 1972. He was offered a contract by German team HSV during a series of friendly matches against Taj that saw the defender wearing Taj jersey in some kind of short loan.
Regarded as one of the first pioneers of Iranian football and for many the best right back in the history of the country, Ashtiani was distinguished for his runs down the right flank and passes that provided numerous goals for Persepolis. His most important match played with Persepolis is probably the 6-0 win against city rivals Taj, where Ashtiani assisted the first goal. Alan Rogers, at the time coach of Persepolis, considered him the only irreplaceable player in the squad. Due to his performances on the right side of the defence, his constant and efficient support to the forward line as well as his remarkable technical skills, he was nicknamed "the Right wing". His attacking prowess was so obvious that sometimes the opposing forwards tracked back to defend. However, he was feared also as defender. In fact, the opponents who had to attack his side, often changed the area to continue their offense. Ashtiani's playstyle was focused on penetrating the opposing defence and then his main task ─ much like most of the other Iran players ─ was to cross the ball in the box. That didn't work at the 1972 Olympics, where every cross was nullified by the way taller defenders of Hungary and Denmark. He played though a major role in the qualification to the Olympics when he provided the assist for Hossein Kalani, who scored the second and final goal in the 2-0 win against North Korea, with a superb pinpoint pass from 30 meters. Unfortunately, Ashtiani was also protagonist of a controversial episode. During his time at Shahin, he received a red card and because he had a master's degree in physical education at a university of Tehran, the news reached the physical education organization that demanded the dissolution of Shahin team.
