He was recruited from the division 4 team Eskilsminne to MFF ahead of the 1974 season and made his debut in both the Allsvenskan and the Swedish A national team during his first year at the club. In 1974 and 1975 he won the Swedish Cup and the Swedish championship with the club. In 1976 he won with the team the vice-championship of Sweden. At the end of 1976 he found his way to the German Karlsruher SC. In summer 1977 he returned to Malmö FF. In the same year he won the Swedish championship with him. In 1978 he moved to Saudi Ittihad FC. In 1979 he moved to the American Chicago Sting. However he missed an indeed very important season for Malmö FF, and didn't participate in the club's most well known international achievement so far, to reach the final of the European Cup in 1978-79 season. In the same year he returned to Malmö FF. In 1980 he won the club's vice-championship in Sweden. In 1983 he moved to Helsingborgs IF. In 1985 he moved to Lunds BK, where he retired in 1986. Incidentally, Thomas is the MFF player who has scored the most goals in the Swedish Cup. Sjöberg's 27 goals is a difficult record to beat. For Sweden, Sjöberg made his debut on August 8, 1974 in a 2-1 friendly against Norway. In 1978 he was called up to the national team for the World Cup. He played on them in all three matches of his team - against Brazil (1-1), Austria (0: 1) and Spain (0: 1). He also scored a goal in the game against Brazil. The Swedes were eliminated from that tournament after the group stage. In the years 1974-1981, Sjöberg played a total of 45 games for the national team and scored 14 goals. Spoiler: show |
