Had a good nose for goal, a sharp finisher. Often would know to play with his back against the opponent, receive the ball and share it immediately. Excellent first touch and header game. Played mostly as a forward, but was also an outside midfielder. In his youth he was also a promising wrestler. It was good training for a football player during the winter half of the year. He scored one of MFF's most important goals of all time when he nicked in the victory goal at home against Austria Vienna in the European Cup semi-final match no. 2. Hansson started playing football in BK Kick, but went to Malmö FF as a 14-year-old. He won his only SM gold in 1977 (his best year) and in the same year had to make his debut in the Swedish A national team. It was an away match against Iceland, which Sweden won 1–0. He played a total of 190 games and scored 52 goals for MFF, of which 84 games and 25 goals were in the Allsvenskan. In 1979, Tommy Hansson, like his teammates, received a copy of Svenska Dagbladet's gold medal for reaching the final of the European Champion Clubs' Cup. Tommy played all the matches in the European Cup 1978/79, apart from the match against Dynamo Kyiv at home. Not only having played in a European Cup final, it was also a World Cup final against Club Olimpia from Paraguay (Nottingham Forest had turned down an offer, and MFF got the chance). Tommy played the first match at Malmö Stadion which ended 0-1. In the return (which was played in February 1980) he sat on the bench (had an inflamed foot) and replaced Anders Olsson in the second half. The return match ended with a 1-2 loss. He then played for IFK Malmö, Lunds BK, Trelleborgs FF, Rydsgårds AIF, Oxie IF and Blentarps BK. Spoiler: show |
