INFO:Jaume Sabaté was a formidable defender who wore the Real Betis Balompié shirt for six seasons in the mid-1970s and was part of that remembered team that in June 1977 was proclaimed champion of the Copa del Rey.
Sabaté was presented as a Verdiblanco player on July 27, 1973. He came from Real Mallorca, an entity to which Real Betis paid five million for his transfer. At the time of his arrival in Heliopolis, Sabaté already had a long football experience. Trained at RCD Espanyol, the club with which he debuted in the First Division at the age of 18, he alternated various assignments in other Catalan clubs such as Olot, Lérida or San Andrés before signing for Mallorca in 1972. The following year he arrived at Betis, then in the Second Division, and from the first moment he became the undisputed starter, offering an extraordinary performance. His debut with the green and white shirt took place on September 1, 1973 in the Linarejos field against Linares, on the opening day of the campaign. Once promoted, Jaime Sabaté was a fixture in that squad that, year after year, grew until they became Cup champions and played brilliantly in the European Cup Winners' Cup in the 1977-78 season.
In the Cup final against Athletic Bilbao, Sabaté played an excellent match and also splendidly transformed the penalty that he was called upon to shoot in the second and final round. He remained at Real Betis until the 1978-79 season, leaving the club at the age of 31 to retire at his hometown club, Badalona. In his six seasons at Real Betis, Jaime Sabaté played 197 games (159 in the League, 33 in the Cup and 5 in the European Cup Winners' Cup) in which he scored 1 goal.
Sabaté remains an extraordinary professional who always showed enormous regularity. A tough and expeditious central defender who liked to play long passes from deep, very precise in marking, anticipating and cutting, who at all times was a guarantee in the Verdiblanca defense.
