He was most famous for being the regular partner of Aad Mansveld, who is known as the club's greatest ever player. Van Vliet was a tall and elegant defender, with good anticipation skills which allowed him to be an effective man marker. He was actually fairly similar to the libero Mansveld, something which caused some problems early in their partnership as they both had the tendency to go forward. The key differences were that van Vliet was a more careful player who took less risks, but he was also far less physical in his play which sometimes made him vulnerable on crosses, and he always preferred a clean interception over kicking his opponents. Although often overshadowed by his defensive partner, he proved to be a reliable stopper for ADO and he finished his career at the club with over 300 appearances.
