Typical small, quick, stocky full back, Brechbühl was a semi-attacking right back who was known for his powerful shot from distance. Nice dribbling to the side, but limited overall due to his small build.
A declared crowd favourite at the Wankdorf Stadium. His football career took a very different course from what he had imagined as a YB junior. Because at that time, the little Brechbühl was an attacking player, or more precisely: a winger. His speed was impressive – but in the first team there was a lot of competition in attack. Coach Kurt Linder, however, thought highly of the fast and athletically impressive Brechbühl and used him first tentatively, then definitely as a right wing-back. Köbi really blossomed in this position, he immediately fought his way into a regular place at YB - and under national coach René Hüssy soon also in the national team. The experts were astonished: There is a full-back who doesn't just stay at the back, but always strikes. Brechbühl's wing runs created a great atmosphere in the stands and sometimes chaos in the opposing team. In his own way, the 168-centimetre Köbi was something like the "Mbabu of the seventies"
He played as a defender and midfielder for BSC Young Boys from 1971 to 1983. In 1977 he won the Swiss Cup with the Bernese team, making 263 appearances and scoring 16 goals. He made 20 appearances for the Swiss national football team between 1976 and 1979.
