A utility player, able to play at left-back, left-half, or in midfield, his tenacious tackling and unwavering commitment made him a tough competitor, and quickly enabled him to establish a great rapport with fans. A tenacious tackler, Pendrey captained both the reserve side and first team. A hard defender, the fans called him The Blues Kung Fu. Fans once sent him an axe and asked him to use it...
Not too speedy, nor the most skillful, but made it up with his commitment. Good ability to read situations and send good long balls/crosses from back.
After 1975, continued to lead by example thereafter but injuries began to reduce his effectiveness, and then Mark Dennis emerged on the scene.
Pendrey signed for Birmingham City in 1965 as an apprentice defender, before agreeing professional terms in October 1966. He played for the club until 1979, making 360 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals. He then had spells playing for West Bromwich Albion, Torquay United, Bristol Rovers and Walsall.
Pendrey made history in 1969 when he became the club's youngest ever captain, aged 20 years and six months.
In 2012, Pendrey was one of seven former players elected to Birmingham City's Hall of Fame - "The Magnificent Seven"
