Cuccureddu is a former side back, capable of playing in nearly every position. In 1975-76, he played at least once as right, left or centre back, defensive, central, attacking, right and left side midfielder. He spent the majority of his career at Juventus, making 438 appearances from 1969 to 1981, scoring 39 goals ─ he became at the time one of the most prolific defenders-midfielders in Serie A history. He played also for Torres, Brescia, Fiorentina and Novara. He capped for Italy 13 times. He took part to the 1978 FIFA World Cup, becoming the first ever Sardinian player to play in a World Cup.
Cuccureddu was an incredibly versatile player, gifted with dynamism, speed, tactical intelligence, high offensive attitude. In his early Serie A years, he was compared to Torino's legend Eusebio Castigliano, who was one of the first defensive players to push forward to look for a scoring chance. Cuccureddu had an accurate, powerful right-footed shot also with the outside that he used mainly from long range. Although, he was comfortable with the left foot as well. He was capable from free kick and penalty. Anyway, his shots always went straight towards the goal, never changing direction. He possessed strength, stamina, great determination to give the team constant support, especially to the strikers. He ran for 90 minutes as fatigue didn't exist for him. He had fine technique and dribbling, alternating hard challenges with elegant actions. He had a fine passing ability, especially when crossing, delivering fast high, mid-high or ground crosses. He was decent in the air as he several times waited for the ball inside the box and made a good leap to hit a header.
