Capello is a former central and defensive midfielder. His career began in 1964 at Spal, where he played 54 matches in four seasons, scoring 4 goals. He transferred to Roma in 1967, staying there for three years, playing 84 games and scoring 18 times. He then had his longest and most successful experience at Juventus from 1970 to 1976, making 240 appearances, scoring 41 goals and winning the Serie A three times. He retired in 1980 after four seasons at Milan, scoring 9 goals in 87 matches. He gained 32 caps for Italy, scoring 8 goals.
One of the best playmakers during the 1970s and one of the best ever in the history of Juventus, Capello was the key in the midfield of every club he played for thanks to his qualities as a player and his leadership that spurred his teammates. His playstyle was simple but highly effective, his footwork and technique superb, his passes and tactical awareness perfect. Capable with both feet ─ he used the right foot most of the times but his left was equally accurate ─ he was also a very good piece taker and had a tendency to score other than create an enormous quantity of opportunities by delivering precious balls to the forwards. His first time touches even with the outside combined with great power made him a fearsome finisher. Moreover, he liked making raids to the box and hit a header every now and then.
