BalancedINFO: José Hidalgo Neto, better known as Captain Hidalgo, was a defensive midfielder who stood out for Coritiba in the 1970s for his leadership and tenacity on the field. He wasn't an individualistic player, but rather a pillar of the team, mainly playing as a holding midfielder, with strong marking ability and combativeness. His great hallmark was his leadership spirit, his ability to motivate his teammates, and the respect he commanded on the field. Characteristics of his playing style: Leader on the field: He was the captain and reference point of the team, demanding and encouraging his teammates during matches. Classic defensive midfielder: He played in the holding midfield position, focusing on marking and distributing the ball, without being a player of flashy or individual plays. Determination: His tenacity and will to win were notable characteristics, and he demanded the same attitude from his teammates. Efficient marking: Although he was a defensive midfielder with good ball control, his main asset was his combativeness and strength in marking opponents. Strong on set pieces: He also contributed with goals, mainly from free kicks.
Intelligence and excellent game vision were defining characteristics of the São Paulo-born midfielder Hidalgo, signed by Coritiba in 1970. Champion of the Torneio do Povo in 1973 and four-time Paraná state champion from 1971-1974, Hidalgo was the captain of the Coritiba team, guiding the team during matches and acting as an extension of the coach on the field, so much so that he even temporarily took over as head coach for the last fourteen rounds of the 1974 Brazilian Championship. The following year, although he remained part of the squad, Hidalgo did not play in any Paraná state championship matches, but he was part of the team's fifth consecutive state championship as coach, taking over the technical command in the early rounds of the tournament.
