Discovered by Hippolyte Van den Bosch in 1969, Francois Van Der Elst is recruited when he was only 14 years at the Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht. He started in this club with 17 years during a friendly match against Sparta Rotterdam. Georg Kessler is the establishment in which the team from 1972. Championship in seven seasons, he will record 80 goals, proving his efficiency in front of goal. He was assisted in this by his speed and acceleration that made him very dangerous in the penalty area. With Anderlecht, Francois Van Der Elst has won almost everything: two championships (1972 and 1974), four Cups (1972, 1973, 1975 and 1976), and two European Cup Winners' Cup in 1976 and 1978 . His career as a team in Belgium is also exemplary: 44 caps and scored 14 goals from 1973 to 1983, finalist of Euro 1980 and participation in the World Cup in 1982.

In 1980, he went on to play for the New York Cosmos. In 1981, he transferred to West Ham Utd for £ 400,000.00. It was against the London club that Swat had scored two of the four goals Anderlecht, in the final of European Cup Winners' Cup, five years earlier. In two seasons at West Ham, he played 68 games and scored 17 goals. He returned to Belgium in 1983 and operated at KSC Lokeren until 1986. His younger brother, Leo Van Der Elst was also Belgian international.
