INFO:

Wolfgang Kneib is former German giant keeper who played most notably for Borussia M'gladbach. He was very strong player with decent mobility for his giant size, with solid reflexes. Kneib's career began in higher-class football in 1970 at the first regional division FSV Mainz 05 . Permanent goalkeeper was Kneib first in the season 1973/74. In the summer of 1973 he won with the team of Mainz, the Southwest Championship, but failed in the Bundesliga promotion round. After the first second-division Mainz years Kneib moved in 1975 to Hessian amateur division team SV Wiesbaden. In 1976 he joined the Bundesliga club Borussia Monchengladbach, and could immediately implement the internal duel against Ulrich Sude and stepped in to replace the injured Wolfgang Kleff. In addition to the German championship that season with Borussia also Kneib reached the finals of the Champions Cup in which the Mönchengladbach on 25 May 1977 lost in the Olympic Stadium in Rome against the English champions Liverpool FC with 1:3. After Wolfgang Kleff had during the 1977-78 season recovered from his injury , Kneib moved for more than half of that season to the bench and again for the 1978/79 season he replaced Kleff. In the final they won the UEFA Cup in the 1978/79 season against Red Star Belgrade (1-1, 1-0) In touch with the coaching change by Udo Lattek to Jupp Heynckes first July 1979 also changed Kneib competitor Kleff the club (to Hertha BSC), the lanky Kneib remained in the 1979/80 season, therefore Borussia goalkeeper. Under his former teammate Heynckes the Mönchengladbach reached that season again the final of the UEFA Cup competition, but with Kneib there in two finals just were short of the Bundesliga Eintracht Frankfurt (3-2, 0-1). For Season 1980/1981 Kneib moved from Borussia Moenchengladbach to Arminia Bielefeld, where he took up the succession of the Hamburger SV migrating Uli Stein. When Arminia he remained the undisputed number 1 between the posts in nine league seasons, 245 games. Then on 23 Match 1984/85 at home to Eintracht Frankfurt (2-2) he took shot at a penalty kick and beat the goalkeeper Jürgen Pahl of Frankfurt. Also in the 2nd Bundesliga and even after the decline of the Hamburger in the low ranks Kneib joined the club and was until the 1992/93 season (now 41 years old) active in the first team Arminia Bielefeld. After his playing days as a professional footballer Kneib is now in the office of the Württemberg Bielefeld BD insurance AG.
