INFOMarcello was born on 12th April 1948 in Viareggio. He started playing for the local team, but when he was 19 he moved to Sampdoria. He started in Primavera, but was constantly climbing in the club ranks and finally became a captain. He made his debut in Serie A on 27th of September 1970 and 6 months later played his first game for Italian National Team B. Critics used to say that Lippi wasn't aggressive enough, but because of his elegant style of playing he was much better that many players back then. He was tall and lacked a pace, but had great tactical awareness and became one of the best Italian sweepers in 70's but couldn't make the NT squad because of abundance of great defenders at the time like Burgnich, Fachetti etc. At that time Sampdoria had a lot of trouble and after ignoring some warning issues by the Italian Federation they were relegated in 1977. "As a captain, I worked hard both on the pitch and outside it. Sometimes when the club didn't pay our wages I had to support others and talk to the boards about it. It wasn't easy." He spent the next 5 years in Serie B with Sampdoria and then moved to Pistoiese in 1979. There he also played as a captain and led the club to Serie A. In 1981 Lippi moved to Luccana, which played in Serie C2.
