INFO:

Arno Steffenhagen was good winger whose promising career suffered a big setback by his involvment in huge Bundesliga bribing scandal in 1971, just after he made the way in the German NT. Fast and tricky winger, who sometimes could even operate as central midfielder. He was solid passer, nimble and agile, pacy on the ball and scored some goals as well. Steffenhagen was a very quick left winger who could also be used on the right side. In his position, Steffenhagen was one of the better players in the Bundesliga who was quite a promise when he started his professional career in 1968 playing for Hertha BSC. His career stalled due to his involvement in the Bundesliga scandal in 1971 when was suspended from playing in Germany and thus emigrated first to South Africa and then to the Netherlands where he spent three years playing for FC Ajax Amsterdam (58 games, 19 goals) between 1973 and 1976. A valuable winger who later returned to play in Germany, this time for Hamburg where he won the European Cup Winners Cup in 1977. In his two years in Hamburg, Steffenhagen was deployed on the right wing as Georg Volkert was preferred on the left wing. At the end of his career he spent six seasons in the NASL (60 goals in 119 games) before retiring in 1984. He moved in 1968 from RFC Old Holland in the Berlin district of Reinickendorf to Hertha BSC. However, there were always problems with coach Helmut Kronsbein, because he didn't want long-haired players and Steffenhagen was sent back at an away game in the team bus in order the long hair could be cut off. On 8 September 1971 Steffenhagen came to his first and last international cap. Other appearances did not come, mainly because Hertha BSC and Steffenhagen took part in the Bundesliga scandal. Steffenhagen was initially banned for two years, but later the penalty has been reduced. He first played at Hellenic Cape Town, but returned back to Europe in order to sign for Ajax Amsterdam. The return to the Bundesliga came in 1976. For two years, Steffenhagen played for Hamburger SV, which won the 1977 European Cup Winners' Cup. In 1978 he went to the USA to Chicago Sting. In the fall of 1978 he played, because Chicago did not qualify for the championship finals, short time for the FC St. Pauli. At the end of his career, he gave in 1983: brief stint in Canada at Toronto Blizzard and Vancouver Whitecaps. In 1984, then finally came an end to football career for Arno Steffenhagen. Steffenhagen played 183 Bundesliga games. Here he scored 39 goals.
