Former M'gladbach side back and side midfielder, Hans Klinkhammer was solid fast player, strong in tackling and knew to make good run on the flank. He played from 1972 to 1980 with Borussia Moenchengladbach and was with Borussia in 1975, 1976 and 1977 German Champion. In 1975 he was also part of the team that won the UEFA Cup against Twente Enschede for Gladbach. A promising young attacking full-back was given in 1972 under coach Hennes Weisweiler his first professional contract. In the same year, also Henning Jensen and Shmuel Rosenthal came to Gladbach, Bernd Rupp returned from the 1 FC Cologne back to the Bökelberg. Due to the high stiff competition in the squad Klinkhammer came in his first season at no use in the Bundesliga. The first game in the Bundesliga, he completed on 25 August 1973 in 4-2 win at Wuppertal SV. He came into this round 1973/74 to 18 appearances and was then in the following rounds regular starter. Even in the 1:3 defeat in European Cup finals on 25 May 1977 in Rome against Liverpool he was in use for Gladbach. In total he played 33 games for Moenchengladbach in the European Cup, scoring two goals. He was called once in 1977 in the B national team. In the summer of 1980 he joined the TSV 1860 Munich. He played one season with the "lions"in the Bundesliga and 1981/82 a season in the 2nd Bundesliga. At Union Solingen in 1983, he finished his career in professional football in the 2nd Bundesliga. In the Bundesliga, he came to 163 games and 5 goals. In the 2 Bundesliga Klinkhammer appeared in 44 games and scored a goal.
