Quote:
Bruno Giordano could have been one of the greatest ever Italian players. Maradona even considers him the best. Giordano was central striker although in his early years he played also on the wing. He was complete striker, IMO his main quality was his shooting. He had strong and precise shot, with outside of his boot and even was skillful at yolleys. He could score from 30 meters, lob the keeper and even place it without some big power in the corner. He was very skillful in scoring from very tight and almost impossible angles, besides he was solid free kick taker and scored often from penalties as well. Bruno was very gifted technically, his first touch wasn't always superb but his dribbling skills were excellent, he could dribble couple of defenders in a row in very tight space showing great close control and composure. He had also good pace and crosses, and scored often with the head despite the fact his stature was very short and didn't have some impressive leap. He had no weak points although in Napoli he wasn't physically on top level after heavy injury in 1983 and certainly didn't have the mobility and endurance like before the Totonero scandal.

Quote:
“L’unico giocatore nel quale mi sono riconosciuto, tra i tanti eredi che mi hanno affibbiato, è stato Bruno Giordano. L’ho visto giocare per la prima volta il 5 novembre del 1975, a Barcellona, in Coppa Uefa. Noi vincemmo facile, ma lui a 19 anni fece delle cose che solo i grandi giocatori sanno fare a quell’età. E ha continuato a farle per tutta la carriera. Un attaccante straordinario, il prototipo dell’attaccante moderno”. - Johan Cruyff

Bruno Giordano was supposed to be one of the greatest ever Italian strikers but...

Early years and fame

Bruno Giordano was born in Rome on august 13th in 1956 and as a child started to play football. Don Francesco Pizzi soon noticed an extraordinary talent in this kid and suggested him to Lazio legend Enrique Flamini who brought Giordano in Lazio for 30000 lira and 10 balls in 1969. Giordano dominated in all Lazio's youth squads which included also other talents like Lionello Manfredonia, Stefano di Chiara and Andrea Agostinelli. New coach Corsini decided to call Giordano in first senior squad in 1975 at the age of only 19, to play alongside his idol from childhood Giorgio Chinaglia. On october 5th in 1975 Giordano made his debut in Serie A and immediately scored his first goal which gave Lazio a victory against Sampdoria. All newspapers wrote about new young sensation. After a third round he already scored his second goal. But Lazio plays bad and is more likely to be relegated. The situation went even worse when Chinaglia left the team in april of 1976. But Giordano responded in best possible way by scoring in all crucial last 3 games against Fiorentina, Milan and Como. Eventually Lazio avoided a relegation thanks to their 20 years old bright star. Immediately after the end of season Lazio president Umberto Lenzini signs Giordano on new contract rejecting offers from Inter and Torino. Next season Giordano already as a star player scores 10 goals and leads Lazio to 5th place in the end. To mention also his great goals in derbies vs Roma and Juventus, despite being only 21 years old. Next season '77-'78 Giordano scores 2 fantastic goals vs Juventus and confirms his high class but his teammates are not on his level and Lazio finishes on 8th place with 12 goals from Giordano. The next season '78-'79 is marked by explosion of Giordano who ends as a best scorer in Serie A with 19 goals and makes also his debut for NT. And all of that despite being only 22 years old and playing with modest teammates. Juventus comes with big offer of 2 milliards lira but Lenzini rejects of course to sell one of the best young players in the world.

Shock

Than a bomb. On march 23rd in 1980 the big match fixing scandal is revealed and after the match Pescara-Lazio police comes to locker room and arrests Giordano alongside with his teammates Lionello Manfredonia, Giuseppe Wilson and Massimo Cacciatori. Whole football world is in shock. Giordano appoints his innocency but federal court doesn't mean like that and Giordano is banned for 3 years and 6 months with Lazio relegated to Serie B. It was like a death for Giordano. At the peak of his career, as the best Italian striker at the time who was supposed to be a leading player on World Cup in 1982, Giordano thought his bright career is finished at the age of only 24. Very depressive and big disappointment for Giordano. But Bruno didn't let the depression to own him and continued to train alone. Meanwhile Lazio were on a brink of survival, almost being relegated to Serie C but still rejecting offers for Giordano from Roma, Udinese and Fiorentina with intervention of lazio fans who idolized a Rome born Giordano. Than a miracle happened in the summer of 1982. After Italian victory on World Cup Italian football association decided to pardon Bruno Giordano and all the other banned players. What an irony in fact that heroics from man who profited from Giordano's ban (Paolo Rossi) gave a new chance for so promising young career of Bruno Giordano.

Comeback

On september 12th in 1982 Giordano makes his comeback for Lazio now in Serie B. Led by Giordano, who was top scorer with 18 goals, Lazio gained a promotion to Serie A. The next season Lazio started good under new president Giorgio Chinaglia but couldn't continue in that good way. Than on december 30 in 1983 a new shock occured. In a match against Ascoli their butcher-stopper makes a criminally brutal foul on Giordano who was taken to hospital in tears. First prognoses said 5-8 months out of action. But another miracle happened since Giordano returned already on april 21 th in 1984 and immediately scored against Napoli after 32 seconds. Unbelievable! Giordano added 2 more goals in following games to rescue Lazio from relegation. But unfortunately Lazio are inhuge financial troubles and Chinaglia decides to sell Giordano and Manfredonia to Juventus but those 2 refused the move in last seconds. Chinaglia was furious. But this time there was no rescue for Lazio who end last in the table and relegation was inevitable. After that Bruno Giordano transferred to Napoli and Maradona after almost 20 years in Lazio's shirt. His career marked by agony continued in south and immediately experienced the winning of both Scudetto and Coppa Italia in 1986-1987. He formed famous front line "MaGiCa" with Maradona and Carnevale and later with Maradona and Careca. And Maradona said Giordano was his most ideal partner in attack he ever had. Giordano scored 23 goals in 78 games for Napoli and left the club after the season '88-'89. He joined Ascoli than and scored 10 goals in 26 games despite the age of 33. After a brief spell at Bologna he returned to Ascoli wher he finished his career in 1992. As a player he was a complete striker. He was two-footed, had amazing shot from all distances and impossible angles. Scored many goals like Matt Le Tissier from volleys, long rockets and tight angles. He was scoring with left foot, with right foot, with head, from free kicks, from penalties and long distances. Giordano was also very fast with the ball, always well positioned in the box and with good dribbling skills and technique. Surely much more complete than Paolo Rossi who went on to shine on World Cup 1982 instead of Giordano. Giordano worked as a coach and commentator after his retirement from active football.
