Tommy was versatile midfielder who could defend, create and score. He was head coach of Sweden's national football team 1991-1997. He is the son of Stig Svensson and uncle of Joachim Bjorklund. Tommy Svensson played many seasons in Osters IF, Växjö and Swedish national team. He was also a professional in the Belgian team Standard Liege. He became coach in Osters IF at the end of the 1970s. It was in Alvesta GIF as former coach Tommy Svensson started his managerial career, and he also had success as coach of Tromsø, Norway before 1991 he became a Swedish manager. He led the Swedish national team in European Championship finals in Sweden in 1992 and 1994 World Cup in the USA. In the European Championships on home ground Sweden fell first in the semifinal against Germany (2-3). The big success came in the 1994 World Cup, where Sweden is surprisingly took the bronze, the first Swedish medal in the World Cup after World Cup 1958 in Sweden. After the World Cup bronze medal went Tommy Smith as head coach until 1997. He has since time as coach worked as an expert commentator on Canal +.
