Manfredonia was a sweeper, centre back or defensive midfielder. He spent the majority of his career at Lazio, playing 234 matches and scoring 10 goals ─ most of the in his last years at the team ─ from 1975 to 1985. He gained 4 caps for Italy in the biennium 1977-78 thanks to his great performances with the Biancocelesti and took part at the 1978 FIFA World Cup. After leaving Lazio, he played 82 matches for Juventus between 1985 and 1987, 94 for Roma from 1987 to 1989, when he retired after he suffered a cardiac arrest on 30th December 1989. In his last two clubs he became also a decent scorer.
A talented player since he was young, Manfredonia possessed very good athletic and technical qualities as well as great commitment. He was defensive minded, careful and accurate in the tackles, had good strength, solid pace and was excellent at intercepting his opponents and covering the space. He was gifted also with sense of tactic good ball control, dribbling, imperious leap, decent heading and passing ability.
