INFO:The general was one of the greatest Romanian players. Anghel was technically gifted inside forward, who scored a lot of goals but also provided numerous assists for his teammates. Player with a well-developed scoring technique and an unusual dribbling ability. He was also well known for his vision and ability to anticipate the opponent. He was skillful free kick taker and good passer. In Romania, he only played for Steaua, a team he joined as a youth player in 1962, at the age of 12. Six years later, in 1968, he made his debut for the first team in the A Division. During this period, in A Division he had 317 appearances and scored 156 goals, becoming Steaua's top scorer. His first appearance for the Romanian national team took place in 1971, where he had 64 caps for the national team and scored 26 goals. He was part of the national team that qualified for the quarterfinals of the 1972 European Championship. Iordănescu won the national championship twice (in '75-'76 and '77-'78) and the Romanian Cup four times (in '69-'70 , '70-'71 , '75-'76 and '78-'79). He ranked 3rd in 1976 and 2nd in 1980 in the ranking of the best footballers in the country. In 1981–82, he was the top scorer in the A Division. In 1982, at the age of 32, Iordănescu left Romania to play for OFI Crete in Greece under head coach Les Shannon, but returned to Steaua two years later to become the club's assistant coach. Between 1987-1989 he was head coach at Steaua. In 1987 he led Steaua to win the European Super Cup. During this period he won three Romanian Cups and three championship titles. He was head coach in the 1988-1989 edition when Steaua played the European Champions Cup final (0-4 with AC Milan). Between 1990-1992 he coached in Cyprus, Anorthosis Famagusta, with whom he participated in the UEFA Cup. In 1992-1993 he returned as head coach in Ghencea and brought back the title after four years. On 8 September 1993, he was appointed coach of the national team. He qualified for two World Cup final tournaments (1994 and 1998) and one of the European Championships in 1996. In August 1998, he left the national team and coached other national teams and foreign club teams, including in Saudi Arabia. In January 2002, he became head coach of the national team again.
