He was born on January 2, 1948 in Krusěvac. He died in 2000 due to cancer, leaving behind his wife and two children. He was known for his ball playing skills, often acting as the third centre back. He had great ball catching skills and was skillful in scoring and saving penalties. In 1965 he arrived at Red Star Belgrade where he was included in the first team starting from the 1967-1968 season. Long employed as Ratomir Dujković 's replacement, he took over the role of starting goalkeeper starting from the 1972-1973 season. In 1976 he was bought by Bastia: after having covered the role of first-choice goalkeeper in the 1976-1977 season he was confirmed for the following one, but he began to suffer from a series of physical problems which would affect his performance. After having played nine league matches and the thirty-second finals of the UEFA Cup, in October 1977 he underwent an operation on his foot, the after-effects of which would cause him serious circulation problems. Following these events Petrović was forced to abandon playing football at the age of 29. He made 15 appearances for the Yugoslavian national team, taking part in the 1974 World Cup as a reserve goalkeeper, and in the 1976 European Championship as a starter. |
