Elias Figueroa is regarded by many as one of the greatest defenders in the history of the game. Figueroa was noted for his elegant style of play, his composure in the centre of defense and his ability to cut out opposition attacks and immediately launch counterattacks from the back with his passing. Elias was strong player with excellent sense of anticipating, good heading abilities and great technique. Most probably the best Chilean footballer ever, he was the only player to beat Pelé three times (South American Footballer of the Year) in the best time of his career. Elegant and calm, Figueroa was the “king” of the box. His favorite sentence was: “The box is my house; I decide who let in!” “O deus da raca” (God of determination), as he was nicknamed, played for several clubs in Chile, Uriguay, Brazil and USA, representing Chile 47 times internationally. Finally, after 20 years of distributing international football hierarchy, retired from professional football practice. Later became a television sports commentator for Chilean and Brazilian, standing equally in his new profession. In 1999 he received the honorable mention of being one of the top eleven players from Latin America and in the same year she was part of a select group of the Great Masters Cup in a ceremony held in Cannes, France.
