Savoldi is a former centre forward ─ also left winger in his early years. His career began in 1965 at Atalanta, where he scored 18 goals in 62 matches. He transferred to Bologna in 1968, making 277 appearances in seven seasons, scoring 126 times. He joined Napoli in 1975, staying there until 1979 and scoring 77 goals in 165 games. He retired in 1983 after another year at Bologna and one at Atalanta. He gained 4 caps for Italy in 1975, scoring once.
Mainly a centre forward, Savoldi was often used as left winger in his early career at Atalanta and Bologna, showing good speed and decent assist-man ability. However, he was more effective as scorer inside the box. In fact, he often preferred to converge to the center, receive the ball and beat the goalkeeper 1-on-1 or with a header. He wasn't very strong but his trickery sometimes led defenders to stop him with numerous fouls. Capable of freeing himself from the defenders, he couldn't do much if marked tightly. He occasionally played as inside but without success.
During his time at Bologna and Napoli he became even more prolific and consistent, equally effective with both feet and almost unfailable inside the box with his great opportunism and timing, very good ball control, side movements and sudden sprints, powerful volleys and accurate shots from difficult positions. Outstanding in the air, he scored many headers thanks to his impressive leap with which he overpowered most defenders. He also proved to be a penalty specialist, having scored 19 penalties for Bologna and 26 for Napoli.
