Castellini was a goalkeeper. He played 267 matches for Torino from 1970 to 1978, winning the Scudetto in 1975-76 and gaining 1 cap for Italy in 1977. He then played for Napoli from 1978 until his retirement in 1985, appearing 259 times. He also played for Monza in his early career.
One of the best goalkeepers in the history of both Torino and Napoli, Castellini was spectacular, efficient and consistent. He set Torino's clean sheet record in 1976-77 with 517 minutes. The record lasted 42 years, before Salvatore Sirigu beat it in 2019. Castellini was gifted with remarkable acrobatic qualities. In fact, he had technique, outstanding reflexes and agility, was capable to save low shots from the distance, make great leaps to reach very high balls − his not very big physique clearly helped him − and use the feet to reject the shots. He was very effective in 1-on-1 situations thanks to good speed and anticipation ability. However he didn't seem very effective out of the goal in other situations, for example he could have troubles when he had to save a header or catching a high cross, showing probably a not very good communication with his teammates. In fact, when he started a new action, he kicked the ball to the midfield most of the times rather than passing it to a defender.
