Antonelli is a former winger and occasionally centre forward. His career began in 1972 at Monza, where he played until 1977 − excluding the 1975-76 season on loan at Vicenza. He then joined Milan, playing 143 matches from 1977 to 1982, scoring 32 goals. He was one of the key players during Milan's first Serie B season, scoring 15 goals and leading his team to the immediate promotion. He then played for Genoa, Roma, once again Monza and retired in 1986.
Antonelli was a very good offensive player, gifted with great coordination of movement, technical qualities, dribbling skills and speed, especially on acceleration. A threat for the opposing defenders, he often beat them with ease after making spectacular turns. He was also a good passer and finisher, accurate with both feet, capable of scoring with volleys, powerful long range shots and occasionally headers despite not having a remarkable jump. A decent set piece taker, he scored some goal from free kick and penalty. Even though he could be deployed in the center of the attack, he seemed less effective from favourable positions inside the box.
