Novellino is a former side midfielder, winger, attacking midfielder and secondary striker. His career started in 1970 at Legnano. He then played for Torino, Cremonese and Empoli. He transferred to Perugia, where he played from 1975 to 1978 and from 1982 to 1984 for a total of 144 appearances and 16 goals. In the middle, a successful experience at Milan, playing 151 matches from 1978 to 1982, scoring 14 goals and assisting 26 times. He played also for Ascoli and Catania, retiring in 1987. He capped for Italy once in 1978.
Novellino was a combative, quick and very agile player. He was short but had a well built physique. He possessed good temperament and excellent technique as he liked challenging and mock his opponents, looking persistently to dribble them everytime they tried to tackle him down. His playstyle reminded that of an attacking midfielder but due to his versatility, he was capable of playing well on the side, where he was mostly deployed. He was a decent scorer, reactive in the box and capable with the head. He was though mainly an assist-man as he was an efficient playmaker and crosser who created favourable scoring chances for his teammates whenever he wasn't too selfish to overdue with personal actions.
