Former Spanish player, more known as a coach but he was very good player. Irureta played as offensive midfielder and inside striker but also in deep central midfield position. Pretty agile and slim, very good technically with great ball control and excellent passing range, especially on short distance. He was very mobile, running constantly forward but also back in defence to help. Despite his small size, he scored often with his head. Player with good pace on the ball and very intelligent and right timed runs in the box which is why he scored a lot of goals although he didn't have some strong shot. He played for Real Union Club de Irun, until 1967, when he enters the ranks of Atletico Madrid debut in the Spanish League on December 17, 1967 in the match Club Atletico Madrid 1:2 UD Las Palmas . With this team won two league titles, one second League and Cup. He participated with his team in the final of the 1974 European Cup in which the Club Atlético de Madrid was defeated by FC Bayern Munich. The following season was proclaimed champion of the Intercontinental Cup scoring the first goal of his team against Club Atlético Independiente in the leg. With the Club Atlético de Madrid played eight seasons contesting 208 Spanish league football. In 1975 he signed for Athletic Club team in five seasons playing disputing over 100 Spanish league football. Also with Athletic played the final of the UEFA Cup in 1977, in which the Athletic Club lost against Juventus Football Club. At the end of the 79-80 season is removed from the playing fields. He played a total of 344 games in the Spanish First Division, scoring 70 goals. In 1984 he started his career as a coach. He began coaching the Sestao for four seasons. In 1988 he signed with a team of Spanish Primera Division, the Club Deportivo Logroñés. His coaching debut in the First Division came in week 1 of that season (September 3, 1988) in a game in which the Logroñes won by a goal to nil Irureta the club where he got his greatest achievements as a player, the club Atletico Madrid. Irureta was on the bench for Club Deportivo Logroñes until week 20, which was dismissed. At that time his team faced a second time at Club Atlético de Madrid and fell derrotado. In 1989 begins to coach Real Oviedo, team in the remaining four seasons. His greatest achievement was accomplished in 90-91 season as the sixth-placed Real Oviedo ended the Spanish league championship football, getting a seat to contest the UEFA Cup for the first time in club history. In the 93-94 season, heads to Real Racing Club de Santander, getting five eighth in Spanish football league, and the following year he train to be his last team as a player, Athletic Club. A midseason following replaces Salvador Iriarte on the bench of the Real Sociedad de Fútbol, computer in another season remaining. In 1997 he joined the Real Club Celta de Vigo, where it gets a sixth place in the Spanish League football, qualifying the team for the UEFA Cup. In 1998 he signed for Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña. With this team achieved its greatest success as a coach. Won a Competition (99-00), the first in team history. Also got two second places and two third places. He also won a Copa del Rey (Season 2001-2002), is popularly known as the "Centenariazo" because it came against Real Madrid in Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, on the exact day that the club met 100 years. Also won two Super Spain. He managed to get his team to the semifinals of the European Cup in the 03-04 season and the quarter-finals twice. He left the club after the season Galician 04-05, leaving the team in 8th place. In 2006 signed for Real Betis, but fails to finish the season and was replaced by Luis Fernandez. The January 22, 2008, replacing Ander Garitano coaching on the bench for Real Zaragoza, but shortly after the March 3, resigns after a run of negative results with the club maño. Irureta has sat on more than 600 occasions on the bench of the Spain Primera Division. On July 9, 2009 accepted the position of athletic director Athletic Club. The May 11, 2011 was presented as co-coach with Miguel Etxarri Euskadi, replacing Jose Angel Iríbar.
