Balan was a midfielder and forward. He played mostly throughout the 1970s and spent his entire career at Al-Oruba, that merged with Al-Nasour in 1972, forming Al-Esteqlal ─ renamed Qatar SC in 1981 ─ winning numerous trophies. One of the most prominent and important Qatari players during the 1970s, he was named best player of the tournament in the 1970 Gulf Cup, where he also scored two goals. He tragically died in 1983, when he was only 36 year old.
Nicknamed "Gem of Qatar" and compared to Brazilian legend Pelé, Balan was skilled and possessed numerous qualities but he was mainly renowned for his combination of tactical awareness and high physical condition. He also was gifted with great behavior and unmatched mentality. He shone thanks to his playstyle of prestigious level and talent that no one else showed before in Qatar. He could score with the feet as well as the head no matter his position. Therefore, the opposing defenders had to control him tightly. However, he could escape and move towards the goal thanks to his accurate dribbling and fine intuitive speed. That led the defenders to tackle him down harshly and despite that, Balan didn't respond to such intimidation with roughness of his own.
