INFO:

One of the best, if not the best defender in England in the mid-70s, Martin Buchan was a legendary player for United and one of the best defenders in their history. Buchan was a classy defender, not rough, but an elegant player with superb positioning and anticipation that specialised in winning the ball cleanly. His reactions were superb and he was excellent in making blocks and interceptions, but he was also a great tackler. Despite his lack of size, he had a very good leap, and his pace made up for any deficiencies in strength. Buchan was also a natural leader and had great organisational skills, which could be seen in United's very aggressive offside trap in the 1977 FA Cup final. He was very composed and steady, never showing any signs of panic. On the ball, he had pretty good technique and could play some nice longer passes, although he usually stayed at the back while his partner went forward as he usually played next to Gordon McQueen or Brian Greenhoff who both possessed good attacking skills. Despite his 11 years of excellent service to United, he only managed to win a single FA Cup and even experienced relegation with the club. Before joining United, he also reached legendary status with Aberdeen and won the Scottish Cup while there. He won 34 caps for Scotland and played for his country at both the 1974 and 1978 World Cups.
